How to recover deleted WhatsApp messages: what you can and can't do
Quick answer
How do you recover deleted WhatsApp messages?
You can only recover deleted WhatsApp messages if they are in a backup made before you deleted them. In that case, uninstall the app, install it again, confirm the same number and tap Restore. According to the WhatsApp Help Center, without a backup there is no way to recover them, because chat history is not stored on WhatsApp's servers.

Three situations with a deleted WhatsApp message
What you can do depends on when you deleted it and when the last backup was made.
Deleted just now
After you tap Delete for me, you have five seconds to tap Undo. Past that, the message is gone for good.
Deleted, with an earlier backup
The message is in the backup. To bring it back, you have to uninstall the app, install it again and restore.
No backup, or a backup made afterward
It can't be recovered. WhatsApp doesn't keep your conversations on its servers and doesn't restore anything for you.

Why WhatsApp doesn't give back a deleted message
The article How to delete messages is direct: deleted messages can't be recovered, and you can only recover a message if it is saved in a backup. The article How to restore your chat history explains why: WhatsApp can't restore, transfer or delete conversations for you, because chat history is not stored on its servers.
It's the same with a whole conversation. According to the article How to delete chats, after you delete a conversation you can only restore the messages if the most recent backup was made before you deleted it. Messages sent after the most recent backup can't be recovered.
That's why the backup date decides everything. If the automatic backup ran after you deleted, it was already saved without the message.
First of all: the conversation may just be archived
Many "vanished" conversations were not deleted. According to the article How to archive or unarchive an individual or group chat, archiving only hides the conversation from the list: it does not delete it or save it to a backup. Look for the Archived folder, or type the contact's name in search, and unarchive.
By default, an archived conversation stays archived even when a new message arrives, and you don't get a notification for it, unless someone mentions you or replies to a message of yours.
How to restore the WhatsApp backup on Android
On Android, the backup is stored in your Google Account. The steps come from the article How to restore your chat history.
- Open the Google One app and sign in to your Google Account.
- Tap Storage and then Other. If there is a chat backup, it appears on that screen.
- Uninstall WhatsApp and install it again.
- When the app asks, tap Restore.
- The free space on the phone has to be larger than the size of the backup.
How to restore the WhatsApp backup on iPhone
On iPhone, the backup is stored in iCloud. The steps come from the same article, in the iPhone version.
- In WhatsApp, open Settings, tap Chats and then Chat backup. If there is a backup, the time and size appear there.
- Uninstall WhatsApp and install it again.
- Confirm your phone number and your Apple account.
- Tap Restore chat history.
- You need free space on the iPhone and in iCloud to restore.
What you lose when you restore a backup
Restoring isn't free: the phone goes back to what existed at the time of the backup. The list comes from the articles How to restore your chat history and About backups saved to your Google Account.
- Everything that arrived after the backup: messages sent and received after the last backup are not restored.
- Videos, if they weren't included: they only come back if the Include videos option was on in the last backup.
- Older backups: on Android, the Google Account keeps only one backup. Each new backup deletes the previous one, so you can't choose an older one.
- A different number won't work: the phone number of the backup and of the restore have to be the same.
What you can't recover on WhatsApp
Everything on this list is stated in the articles How to delete messages, How to delete chats and I can't back up or restore my chat history.
- Message deleted without a backup: it can't be recovered. Asking support doesn't help, because WhatsApp doesn't have your history.
- Message deleted by a group admin: it can't be recovered or appealed.
- Delete for me after five seconds: once the Undo window has passed, the message is deleted for good.
- Corrupted backup: WhatsApp doesn't restore backups for you and doesn't say what damaged the file.
- Backup idle on Google: Google automatically deletes a WhatsApp backup that goes more than five months without an update.
How to turn on backup so you don't lose conversations again
Having backup on is the only way a deleted message can come back. The steps come from the article How to back up your chat history.
- On Android: open the app menu, tap Settings, then Chats and Chat backup. Under Back up to Google Account, choose a frequency and the account.
- On iPhone: in Settings, tap Chats, then Chat backup and Auto backup, and choose the frequency.
- Include videos, if they matter: the option is on the same screen.
- Use Wi-Fi: the file can be large and use up your data plan.
- Exporting the chat is not a backup: according to the article How to export your chat history, an exported chat is a text file and can't be imported back into WhatsApp.
You can't restore on a computer
According to the article How to restore your chat history, you can't back up or restore history on linked devices, such as WhatsApp Web and the Windows and Mac apps. To create and restore a backup, you have to use the phone.
How linked devices work is covered in WhatsApp Business Web: on a computer and on multiple devices. If what vanished was the whole account, see banned WhatsApp number: what to do.
For a business: customer conversations shouldn't live only on a phone
In a business, a deleted conversation can be an order, an address or a price agreement. While it exists only in the app, everything depends on one phone and a backup no one checks.
At CertuAI, the AI replies on your number and leaves each conversation noted in the customer dashboard, where the team follows along. This does not recover deleted WhatsApp messages: no system does. See the customer dashboard connected to WhatsApp.
